First Look: ‘Ernest and Celestine’ From the Directors of ‘A Town Called Panic’
Just today I was recommending the incomparably wonderful animated film A Town Called Panic to a friend, which it occurred to me to wonder: what progress has been made on the project the makers of that film (Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar) are cooking up now? They’re making a new film, Ernest and Celestine (co-directed by Benjamin Renner), and as it turns out there is actually a current article about it in Variety, based on the fact that yesterday saw the debut of footage at the Annecy festival in France.
So that crop above is probably your first look at Ernest and Celestine, which adapts the book series by Gabrielle Vincent. The full image is below, along with some more news on the film. It looks like quite a change of pace from A Town Called Panic…
Variety announces that Lambert Wilson (The Matrix Reloaded, Of Gods and Men) will voice Ernest, “a gruff bear who wants to be an artist, who befriends Celestine, an ingenious mouse.” Also in the cast are Anne-Marie Loop, voicing an aged lady mouse and Dominique Collignon, playing a dentist.
Acclaimed French writer Daniel Pennac penned the screenplay, based on the series of illustrated kids books by the late Gabrielle Vincent. Goran Bregovic, who has often worked with Emir Kusturica, is reportedly doing the film’s music. And Didier Brunner is producing; he was behind a couple films that people liked, such as The Triplets of Belleville and The Secret of Kells, so that is probably a good sign for this one.

Dating show lumps furs with trekkies, chubby lovers
Could furry be holding your love life back? Los Angeles television producers appear to think so, judging by a recent casting call for an unnamed dating show:
Looking for Vampires, Wolves, furries, adult babies, trekkies, comic book lovers, body builders, Wiccans, puppetears (sic.), roller chicks, chubby lovers, … Are you single and genuinely looking to find true love, but something is holding you back??
Researchers at the University of California, Davis might disagree; their 2007 furry survey found ‘about half’ the respondents were in a relationship – of those, 76% were with other furries.
[UPDATED by Markos]
Saralane Reality World is the production company behind this casting call. Saralane Boasberg has been contacting furries through Facebook asking if they would be interested in participating. She was the Production Associate for the Tyra Banks Show responsible for casting ChewFox and her mate.
Nepal’s First Translocated Tiger Found Dead
Via TreeHugger
in January of 2011, a group of biologists and conservationists in Nepal moved a tiger from a rehabilitation facility in Chitwan National Park to a new reserve in Bardia National Park.
Fitted with a radio collar, the tiger—named Namo Buddha—represented a unique opportunity for researchers to closely follow the behavior of an introduced tiger. Unfortunately, this same technology led them to a grisly discovery a few short months later.

A Chronology of Furry Fandom by Fred Patten
There is no single specific date or event that can lay claim to being the birth of furry fandom. However, there is general agreement that it was around late 1983 or early 1984 that furry fans coalesced out of SF fandom and comics fandom and began an independent identity.
Due to the practice in the comic-book industry of dating one to three months in the future, the dates of the comic books listed here may be a month or two later than their actual appearances.
To indicate significant geographic centers of furry fandom, the home cities have been listed of active fans. Entries without cities indicate that the individuals named have not been active in furry fandom.
The goal of this chronology is to list the "first" and the "most influential" entries in the many aspects of furry interest. If there were more room, many other favorites could be added to each category: novels such as Brian Jacques' Redwall series, Paul Kidd's Mus of Kerbridge, Mark Rogers' Samurai Cat series, and Mary Stanton's The Heavenly Horse From the Outermost West; movies like Animalympics, The Great Mouse Detective, and Meet the Feebles; TV cartoons such as The Amazing 3, Animaniacs, Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers, the animated Star Trek with Lieutenant M'Ress, SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron, TaleSpin, and Tiny Toon Adventures; comic books like The Chronicles of Panda Khan, Eb'nn, Red Shetland, Space Beaver, and Wild Life; fanzines like Hunca Munca! and Pawprints; MU*s like Animal Nation, FurryFaire, FurToonia, Redwall MUCK, and Tapestries. It was not our intention to slight anything, but space limitations precluded our including everything. Please consider this chronology in the nature of a brief encyclopedic summary. A detailed history of furry fandom is yet to be written.

The Tiger and the Girl
Fans of the Twilight series and fans of animal transformation would do well to check out the novels of Colleen Houck. Her first book, Tiger’s Curse, introduces us to a teenage girl named Kelsey. She’s been given a very unusual assignment: Accompany a rare white tiger as he is shipped back to his native India. As soon as she lands though, things begin to get strange right away. Turns out that Ren, the former circus superstar, is not actually a tiger at all: He’s an Indian prince trapped under a bizarre magical curse which only allows him to assume his human form for 24 minutes a day. What’s more, Kelsey has been chosen by a powerful Indian goddess to be the girl who is destined to help Ren defeat the curse. Some assignment! Splinter released Tiger’s Curse in hardcover last January, and recently they released Tiger’s Quest, the second book in the series. In it, Kelsey must return to India to assist Ren’s less-than-savory brother Kishan, who has also fallen prey to the tiger’s curse. You can find out about these books and more in the series at Colleen Houck’s web site.
Fur Paws enters open beta
Author: GreenReaper
Furry artistic social community Fur Paws is now in open beta.
Created by Fur Affinity founder Alkora, the site was launched June 2, but went down for two days after a security issue was raised, allegedly involving the naming of uploaded files.
Fur Paws features multi-picture character profiles, folders and a safe-for-work login option. Currently only images and stories are supported; music uploads are planned. Initially known as Art Paws, the site was renamed over trademark issues. It has adopted an ‘honest’ privacy policy.

Finnish furs prepare for summer camp
Author: GreenReaper
For many furs, Anthrocon is approaching – but roughly 50 Finns are looking forward to the first FinnFur Summer Camp (website), held 1-3 July at Röskö in the forests of North Karelia. Planned activities include BBQ, lake swimming, rowing, motor-boating and dances, plus indoor games.
All cabin spaces have sold out (at 30-40€ + 10€ for sponsors); campers can still attend for 35€.
The event is led by SlvWolf, founder of Finnish-language Furboard and TurriWiki, and was mentioned in a letter to Knotcast #141 (AAC/MP3 – 10:43).

Buster Wilde: Weerwolf
Folks who have been following on-line comics for a while, especially anthro comics, might recall a particular one called Buster Wilde: Weerwolf. As written and drawn by Scott Zellman, it tells of the trials and tribulations of an ordinary heterosexual human guy who, once bitten, keeps transforming into Buster — a decidedly queer werewolf with a party-all-night attitude! No it’s not pornographic and yes, it’s very much for adults only. Originally available exclusively on the Buster site at Furnation.com, FurPlanet and Bad Dog Books have announced that it will now be released as a black & white trade paperback later this June. Mr. Zellman has also been re-printing the original Buster strips in a larger format up on BadDog’s site.
