Anthrocon Attendance Up By 160, Raises $11,000 for Toonseum
Posting final numbers of 4400 in attendance, Anthrocon surpassed its record (4238 in 2010) and set another record. According to their official Twitter stream, they also raised $11,000 for the Toonseum. They also set a record with 854 Fursuiters in the Fursuit Parade. Their announced theme for 2012 is “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” based on the play by William Shakespear (think fairies, satyrs and mythical creatures).

Gawker Media loves the furries! Over the past 6 months, they have had furry coverage on Kotaku, Gawker, Gizmodo and now, Deadspin. Deadspin is the sports news blog that recently leaked the photos of Bret Farvre’s junk.
This weekend, they decided to highlight photos and coverage of Anthrocon from Pittsburgh’s 96.1 Morning Freakshow.

The “furries” were in town for the annual Anthrocon convention, the world's largest convention for those fascinated with anthropomorphics, which are human-like animal characters.
Thousands of “furries” come every year in June and cause quite a stir on the streets on Pittsburgh. Most people stop and stare. Some even take photos with the “furries.”
You may be wondering, what is a furry? Click here for a description on Anthrocon’s website.
On Thursday, Channel 11 hit the streets and spoke with some of the “furries.”
“It’s part of expressing yourself physically and emotionally. It’s an alter-ego. It has a lot to do with art,” said a furry who said she was dressed as a monster.
“A lot of my personality traits fit a husky. I love being cold. I love being outside. I’m usually pretty loyal to people,” said the husky furry.
Channel 11 asked the husky and his friend what they do at the convention. They said they socialize and check out the art.
Channel 11 also caught up with the “bandit wolf” from New York. He didn’t talk but gave Pittsburgh and the convention two thumbs up.
The convention took place at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center Thursday through Sunday.
Furries Descend on Pittsburgh for Fur Suit Festival

Maureen O'Connor — Thousands of furries descend on Pittsburgh this weekend, for the sixth annual Anthrocon, America's foremost convention for "anthropomorphics," commonly known as "furries." Participants are already wandering the streets of Steel City, wearing costumes and carrying puppets, posing for pictures with locals, going to raves, and singing "furraoke" while boozing at local bars.
This must be confusing for the children of Pittsburgh.
Furries are expected to spend $5.3 million in four days at the festival, which makes them pretty popular this weekend. Here are some locals talking about furries:
"We love furries," [sandwich shop owner Cory Robinson] said. "They're just people having fun, and they don't hurt anybody." —Sandwich shop owner Cory Robinson
"They love caffeine. We're prepared. We know what they want." —Gift shop owner Tracy Luskovich, gesturing to stockpiles of Mountain Dew
"More fun than the NRA." —Beaver County Times columnist Michael Pound
I have a mild phobia about people in full-face masks. I think it derives from bad childhood experience with a Nutcracker Rat King. Occasionally, I wonder whether a furry horror movie could have the staying power of a Chucky or It. Anyway, irrational fears aside, I applaud the joyous souls of Anthrocon for living their hirsute dreams. May your stay in Teresa Heinz-Kerry's hometown be as fabulous and furry as a ketchup heiress's collection of winter coats. [Post-Gazette, Anthrocon]
Update: As some have noted, Teresa Heinz-Kerry is not a trueborn Pittsburghian, nor is she a current resident! Apologies. Feel free to plug the name of some other, locally relevant rich person into that sentence.
Get Snarked
Writer and artist Roger Langridge has previously earned a comic book Harvey Award for his work on The Muppet Show, published by Boom! Studios. Now he returns to Boom! with a completely new full-color original work called Snarked!, coming out this October. But first, Boom! is present a special “Issue 0″ version this August, featuring a self-contained 8-page story and lots of background material for the upcoming series. In Snarked!, Mr. Langridge offers his own take on the world of Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland. Specifically, the crafty Walrus and the rather clueless Carpenter take a young prince and princess off on a wild goose-chase… or rather, a wild snark-chase.
