DAE wish that their ears could be as fun and expressive as a fur's?

Furry Reddit - Thu 6 Oct 2011 - 03:27

Perking up when you're paying attention, drooping when you're sad, scared, or disappointed, twitching when they're touched... I can wiggle my ears a bit, but it's just not the same, and it has to be on purpose...

Lurker for awhile, kind of half-new to the fandom, but just saying hello!

Furry Reddit - Wed 5 Oct 2011 - 23:34

Hey! I've lurked around r/furry for a long time now, finally thought I'd say some sort of hello. :)

I don't know how to describe it, but a lot of my friends don't know that I'm really into the furry community and enjoy a lot of the stuff about being a furry. A small handful of them dislike furries rather a lot (for no apparent reason, I might add).

I'm mostly in it for the art. I love drawing, and art of all kinds, and a lot of my art right up through middle school was of a furry/anthro sort. I got kind of out of it when I got to high school and noticed how much bashing furries got around my school and even some of the people I hung out with... So I suppose it was kind of a way of hiding from the haters to stop doing my furry art. I had a good fursona for who I was back in middle school... but have yet to formulate a new one, so we'll see what I can come up with. :)

That being said, I'm not likely to RP unless it's something really worth my while, and I'm not planning on EVER being classified with the stereotypical "scary" furries, as I've heard them called. (Sorry if that second part may have come across as kind of offensive, but some of my friends have an uncalled for hatred of furries because of a couple bad experiences and the bad reputation furries get for the acts of a very small number of us).

So. Just saying hello and letting it be known that at some point I might be doing some sort of art related stuff around here! Feel free to say hi! I don't bite!

EDIT: "Art" may or may not include commissions at some point.

my friend is a furry, anyone mind answering my questions about the fandom?

Furry Reddit - Wed 5 Oct 2011 - 17:12

Skip past my reason for asking if you do not feel like reading it.

So for a good while, I have been a close friend with a member of the fandom, while I wouldn't call myself a furry (just yet), I am very interested in all this. My friend met me inside a game and because boredom set in, we decided to talk to each other. He asked about the art I drew and I said that I was weird and drew cat people, I didn't expect him to ask me about being a furry, mostly because I had no idea what a furry was. I asked around and people told me nasty things, while others told me otherwise. I decided to ask my new friend what a furry was and his story seemed more likely than what the majority was saying (majority saying furries are sex addicts, like stereotypical gay men. My brother is gay, so I new that stereotypes like widespread sex addiction are never quite true).

So /R/Furry, I hope you don't mind answering my questions, because, as my friend put it, I am a "curious cat".

1-9 has been answered before, but feel free to add anything that hasn't been said yet.

1) What are meetups like? Is everyone wearing ears or some identifier? Is anyone going 100% human? 2) I've heard there are a few slang words that I don't quite understand, like "Scritch", and "yiff", does any body mind telling me a good list of the words and their connected meanings? 3) What are relationships (in the fandom) like? 4) How are things handled in the bedroom? Is there an obligation to wear a suit behind closed doors? (Please be as clean about this as you can) 5) Is there a way to meet furries? I only think that talking to some might be beneficial (as my friend lives on the other coast). 6) Why are foxes so common? I see so much art for them I am almost screaming for some diversity. 7) It seems that my friend is a rare straight fur, why are there so many gay furries? (I am not being discriminatory, just curious)

EDIT 8) What is role playing like in the fandom? Are there any guides to it if I wanted to attempt it?

9) Why all the crazy colors for fur?

10) Why are there sub-communities for furries inside of other communities? (Such as games)

11) What qualifies as furry specific? People tend to say that starfox or cartoon characters (EX: puss 'n' boots) are not.

12) Are there subtle identifiers for furries in public?

Can we please stop saying "read the F.A.Q."? As long as people are willing to post then there is no need to bother wasting your time posting this redundant message. I have always favored people answering my questions because they go into much more depth than a pre-written message. I have read the F.A.Q., but people posting will give better detail and a much more personal experience.

I need some help with a Fursuit Head

Furry Reddit - Wed 5 Oct 2011 - 15:20

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to read this. I've been really wanting to make my own fursuit lately, but one major factor is that I don't know which type of material I should use. Things like the Balaclava Method and the mesh method seem to be some of the more popular, but I was wondering some of the basic things: Which ones are the easiest to make, cheapest to make, most available materials, time, and how the final outcome is. I know that's asking for a lot, but I need to know whether one material creates a better fursuit and whatnot. Thanks.

Does anyone else enjoy the fandom for its uniqueness, for being different?

Furry Reddit - Wed 5 Oct 2011 - 13:51

Not really sure how to ask this type of question so I think its best I start off with my hook to furries and why.

Since I was a kid I watched many movies like The Secret of NIMTH, The Land Before Time, Water Ship Down, Disney's Robin Hood, Bambi, and Once upon a forest and fell in love with the world of furries because of wonderful movies like this.

I love how unique and different they are. I see and interact with humans every day and its nice to be able to day-dream of another civilization made of anthromorph's.

Does anyone else enjoy the fandom for its uniqueness, all I have ever read about and seen is 'yiff piles' and anything of the sexual nature.

I'm the type of person who would suit up and walk down the street for fun, or even walk through the mall. I see and feel apart of the the innocent side of being a furry but I feel it is clouded by the dark side of it.

Its really hard to explain how I feel, I hope this make's some sense.

EDITED

EDIT Just wish to say thank you to all the replies, I am happy to see that there are others that think similarly.

Furs! Can you help me out for a second? (Survey)

Furry Reddit - Wed 5 Oct 2011 - 13:14

EDIT: Just hit 100 answers! That's all I need. Thanks everyone for participating!

Survey Here

As posted in r/LGBT:

I'm a LGBT undergrad student studying linguistics, with interest in the way different minority groups view themselves. I have a quick (5 min or less) survey for my assignment this week. It just occured to me that Reddit would be the quickest way to get a large number surveyed.

If y'all could help me out and fill this out, then I'd be most greatful.

This is all anonymous.

I'm finding some interesting stuff, and I could use a new demographic. If you take this survey, on question #5 could you add "r/furry" so I can seperate the groups? Thanks!
