Strangeness from Antarctic Press

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 8 Feb 2012 - 02:19

Where to even begin, except to say: Dead Pooh. Yes. Here, we’ll let the perpetrators try to explain: “Trash-collecting bear by day, crime-fighting martial artist by night. Dead Pooh protects the citizens of Woodland City from the menace of the Candy King. In the best traditions of parady, Comi-Kazi presents the latest hero to arise to confront the forces of darkness for truth, justice…and a jar of honey!” Sure to raise the hackles and the temperature of Marvel fans and Disney fans alike.  This loony full-color one-shot is written by Al Sharpe, illustrated by Marat Mychaeis and Sean Davis, and scheduled for release from Antarctic Press in March. Oh bother.

Any Mid-West Furfest regulars? I have some questions...

Furry Reddit - Tue 7 Feb 2012 - 21:00

Hey, I was curious about some things concerning the convention. You see, i live about 2 hours away from the location of the event, and I am more than happy to take a couple trains to go. The only problem is, I'm 16. Yes, I get it. 'A little young for conventions, hm?" I can handle myself fine. I will nearly be 17 by the time the convention comes around, and I'm a mature young man who would be going with an older friend of mine.

The real problem is that my friend says I should wait until I'm 18. This is because he says that a large portion on the convention is 18+ only and that people look down on the younger attenders.

Can anybody confirm this? I am quite interested in the event, and wanted some speech from the /R/ Furry community. I was planning on going this year, and waiting one more year until i am 18 to go back if it really is that way, but if you guys can talk me out of it, I can wait 2 years, I guess.

And please, be respectful and honest. If you have seen younger people causing trouble there and you don't want more, don't make that get in the way. I assure you I am mature enough to handle everything. The people I would be going with are older and my parents are okay with it. Just so you know.

Greatly appreciate if I could be reassured with this. Somebody around my age that has went before answering would be very nice, too.

Thanks a bunch.

Time for us to describe our Sonas!

Furry Reddit - Tue 7 Feb 2012 - 20:55

SO I'm thinking it's time for us to give a description of our Fursonas again and I know we all like talking about our sonas. Yeah the Flair is wonderful but you can only put so much in a few words. This way if any artist would like to experiment with drawing separate fursonas, perfect descriptions are in here. All that is asked is that the artist please PM the person and put a link in this thread. I shall go first!!!

Name: Dekoa

Species: Silver Fox

Attributes: Mood Hair/Eyes, Sorcerer/Technomage

Description:

I am a Silver fox around 24 years of age. I've got Black Socks on both my footpaws (up to my knees) and on my fore arms (up to my elbows). My ears are black with the inner ears being white along with my tail tip being white. My muzzle is also black. I've got brown-blonde hair, but on the left side is a stripe of hair that is a different colour that changes along with my Iris to match my mood or whatever magic I'm casting at the time. However the colours typically remain a shade of calm blue. Usually I'm dressed in a Hero of Time hoodie (Link below), jeans, and glasses. I also have sorcerer abilities of being able to control Arcane Magic to my will. However I'm also quite adapt with technology as my friends call me a Technomage.

Edit: Guys if you leave a post, please make sure to upvote (Or downvote if that is your flavor) the post so others can see it. We have 30+ comments but only ~10 votes.

Your sona and you.

Furry Reddit - Tue 7 Feb 2012 - 13:10

Ive recently been rethinking my own fursona and was curious to know, do you choose a fursona to reflect on your true self or do you use your fursona to escape from yourself? For myself personally I first chose a feline due to adoring kitties and my own habit or mewing and purring. But recently Ive felt the want to move away from my feline fursona and opt for something totally different and new.

Are we not men? We are deviants.

Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript
Abstract: To date there have been no serious sociological studies of the furry subculture. Though a common definition is elusive, a furry is a person who has strong personal associations with animals/animal characters and/or asserts a particular animal identity. These identities encompass an expansive range of activities from playful dress-up and chatter to bestiality or claims of ?species dysmorphia.? This paper is a content analysis of the strategic language of on-line communities dedicated to pro-fur culture; websites with such names as tigerden.com, fursuitsex.com, furcentral.com, and others that intend to not only create a community for furries but also to normalize their activities by neutralizing potential stigma. Though it is not a study of the ?crime? of furverts per se, we do also analyze the content of the strategies of those who attempt to de-legitimize those who desire the pleasures of the fur by embracing legal statutes. Similar to other deviantized and criminalized sexualities, zoophilia (perhaps even plushophilia) faces the articles of law that are rather vague and intentionally worded to allow prosecution and persecution of those who engage in untoward behaviors. Comparing not only furry vocabularies of identity and strategies of community with legal vocabularies used to thwart such efforts, we find that this discursive struggle is extensively similar to ones undertaken by other deviantized sexual groups in the past.

Nothing compares to a river... Lamb's story is a lyrical tale of life and loss and finding your way in the world amidst family tragedy and the journey of adolescence.

Lamb notes that this story is dedicated to Eldyran, who probably didn't know what he did for me in my bizarre time of need. Thank you, coyote.

Ask Papabear: Why Do People Reject Hermaphrodites?

Furry News Network - Mon 6 Feb 2012 - 20:56

Hello, Papabear.

Why are people so upset with the thought of a third gender? Furries, etc, seem to be mostly fine with it.

I’m an androgynous pseudohermaphrodite (“shemale,” in porn terms) and I like myself, but people always seem to have a problem with that… I didn’t become this, I grew into it, for the most part.

Some research showed me that men don’t like it when you’re attractive for them, while having a penis and women don’t like that you’re not a valid prey for them… :\

Do you know the answer?

Thanks,

Jen

Dear Jen,

Wow, this is a big question. There’s no way I could give a fully satisfactory answer within the scope of the “Ask Papabear” column, but I will try and provide a little basic insight.

From what you say above, you are a male pseudohermaphrodite, in which you appear to be female at first glance but you have a penis. (I believe “androgynous pseudohermaphrodite” is redundant, but I could be wrong).  Pseudohermaphroditism is sometimes called being “intersex,” in which a person exhibits some characteristics of both genders. It’s not so much a “third sex” as it is a combination of the other two.  There is also female pseudohermaphroditism (having ovaries but outwardly male in appearance) and true hermaphroditism (having both ovaries and testes). I’m writing this for the benefit of my readers; I’m sure you already are familiar.

As to why men and women may be uncomfortable with your being androgynous, the answer is pretty basic. Human beings, as with all animals, are biologically programmed to reject individuals who they feel would not make viable reproductive partners. This is the same reason why many people are cruel to and reject people who are different from them in other ways.  Humans, no matter how much we aggrandize ourselves and believe we are superior to other species, are just animals with big brains.  We still behave in very fundamental ways, for the most part, that have to do with survival of the fittest and reproduction. The results can sometimes be hurtful. Let’s face it, humans still have some evolving to do. (Perhaps furries are more evolved, having shown they accept you!)

Of course, in a happier world, we would have all evolved beyond such prejudices and accept others for what they are. What matters, as you know, is what’s on the inside. You, Jen, have clearly accepted yourself. You like yourself, and that is so wonderful! Some hermaphrodites opt for surgery, but you are staying true to yourself.

But now you have a really tough task. If you don’t want to be alone in your life, you’re going to have a challenging time finding someone who accepts you for you. This is certainly not impossible; it’s just going to be tough.

You might wish to consider checking out the Intersex Society of North American at http://www.isna.org/ which lists some support groups and has more information on the subject.

I hope this helps, Jen. Good luck!

Hugs,

Papabear
