Is the producer of Beauty and the Beast afraid of furry fandom?

Furry Reddit - Sat 13 Oct 2012 - 13:58

Just finished watching the pilot.... This? This is a "beast"? I guy who hulks out a bit and goes berserk when he's angry? So disappointed.

(What can I say... GRRM's Vincent was my first furry crush.)

CAN DO and DON’T DO

DailyFurBlog - Sat 13 Oct 2012 - 10:33

Frisky (MC_Frisky on FA) put up a great post for his “Dos” and “Don’ts” for his 7 year furry anniversary. I had to to post this here because this stuff is true to my belief too. Check it out (you’ll need to hit the “read more” button to see):

Dos

1. Try to get involved in your local furry community and be social: This one is probably the most important one, I mean its obvious that you’re going to want to make friends as soon as possible but I know local furry communities aren’t available to everyone. But when that day comes when you actually find someone close enough to you to hang out with, try not to be so shy. Must of the time they’ll probably be as shy as you are so its best to just relax and let the words flow.
2. Be Creative: Creative ideas are what fuel the fandom pretty much so feel free to contribute in any way shape or form, whether it be art, poetry, music, videos, fursuiting, event hosting etc. If you have a handful of characters, make sure to develop them and not leave them hanging. Let your imagination run free.
3. Stay away from drama at all costs: I apply this to my life all the time, that’s why I’m stress free. Unless people are bringing it directly to your doorstep or you got a friend caught in it and you feel the need to step in and help, stay away from the drama.
4. Be cautious of who you get close to: Now once you have your friends or even a potential love interest or two, its best to really get to know them first before you decided to dish out your trust because its possible to be super close to someone one day and then next thing you know, you don’t hear from them ever again. It happens, so just be wise about who you get attached to.
5. Try new things and be open-minded: Some people come in the fandom feeling reserved and used to a certain way of doing things but why not shake things up a bit by trying something different. It could be trying a new activity, going to a con or trying a new food or just something in general that’ll make you want to step out of your comfort zone briefly. New experiences are what keep life interesting, at least to me anyway.
6. Keep in touch with the gang: If you’re lucky than over time you’ll be forming some deep friendships that have potential to last a lifetime but what’s important in preserving them is staying connected. Some of my closest friends live far away but when we get back together it feels like no time has past, that’s really special.
7. Expand your horizons: The fandom is an awesome place to be that doesn’t mean you have to limit your life to it. There are people out there who only do things that are exclusively furry related and that’s just silly. It’s a hobby that can be pretty much applied anywhere and if it cant, that shouldn’t discourage you from trying something completely different. Go on, the fandom will be here when you get back.

Donts

1. Don’t take anything online too seriously: Anyone can sweet talk their way out of a paper bag online, real life is a different story. I guarantee you’ll save yourself a lot of heart ache if you think twice about if what these people are telling you is sincere or not. Their word might mean something now but in a short time it could mean absolutely nothing, just be cautious. This includes role play as well, no matter what you see written down does not mean that there’s genuine feeling behind it.
2. Don’t do a long distance relationship (At least til you meet them): I’m not knocking long distance relationships at all, I’m just suggesting to meet up first then see what happens.
3. Don’t blow all your money on commissions and cons: Seriously take priority in what you spend your money on, if you got overdue bills then it may not be best to buy that fursuit just yet.
4. Don’t get a fursuit for the wrong reasons: Speaking of which, if you’re buying one just to look cool, to fit in, or cause all your friends have one, then those are bad reasons. You should want to perform, be creative, or at least have a blast bringing your character to life.
5. Don’t be the one to test out if your friend is bi or not: It’ll lead to many complications
6. Don’t hold yourself back from doing what you want: Don’t let uncertainty bring you down, if there’s something you want to do then you do it, don’t let others discourage you either. It could range from talking to someone you admire or doing an act for the masquerade, you only live once right.
7. Don’t stay stuck on the internet: For real guys, its ok to live the laptops at home once in a while

Have we ever mentioned we love to get feedback? A few weeks ago we received a rather lengthy email in regards to our In a Furry World series, and since it had been a while since we talked about that, we decided to revisit that subject for a week.

We read a few of his questions and have a lot of discussion about that and other things. We also realize that the “terrible twos” can be a whole lot worse with canids. What do we mean? Listen to find out!

Weasyl is a new furry art site and it looks amazing. Anyone else in on it?

Furry Reddit - Fri 12 Oct 2012 - 19:59

http://weasyl.com is the new art site for furries. Right now it's in beta, and only donators are allowed to register for accounts. You can go to their tumblr at http://weasyl.tumblr.com and donate $5 to get your own account. Or you can wait for when they turn on invites. When that happens, each already registered weasyl user gets (I think) 10 invites they can send out to people. From then on, (I believe) every user gets a set amount of invites per month, and users will slowly be flowing in.

I donated and got in just the other day. So far I can say the site is extremely smooth and easy to navigate-- I like it a lot. Have any of you checked it out, yet?

EDIT: Well for those who don't already know about weasyl, it's down for maintenance this weekend. I completely forgot. Bad timing on my part. But for people who already do know about it... What're your thoughts?

Fish Boy to the Rescue

In-Fur-Nation - Fri 12 Oct 2012 - 19:06

This December Oni Press will present a new hardcover graphic novel, Mermin, Volume 1: Out of Water. This full-color all-ages comic was written and illustrated by Joey Weiser. “Mermin, the Merman from Mer!? That’s the question Pete and his friends ask after finding the fish-boy washed up on the beach! Mermin just escaped the undersea kingdome of Mer, and is ready to have some fun on dry land! But why would this aquatic kid be afraid to swim? Perhaps it has something to do with the fishy pursuers who have followed him from the depths below!” Joey discusses some of the creation process behind this new comic on his blog at Tragic Planet.

A tekkit server, for the furries.

Furry Reddit - Fri 12 Oct 2012 - 16:34

So I've seen a lot of trouble with the last few tekkit servers (or at least, the last one I saw). Hardware limitations and such.

Anyway, my computer is always on, so the server should be on 24/7, barring internet issues. I'm going to trial it for a day or two, so I'd love it if people could hop on. I'm on a limited bandwidth connection right now, so I'm hoping it doesn't use up too much. If it does, I'll take it down until we get back on a plan I can work with. I'm also going to be testing out my hardware, but I don't think there will be a problem with it.

Anyway, IP is here: 70.26.4.227

Rules:

No griefing. I'm going to include massive use of a destruction catalyst in this - I don't want to be remaking the server every three days because someone stripmined a thousand blocks in every direction with a catalyst. No nuclear reactors outside of blast blocks. I don't want the server being ruined. If you must use the blaze rod exploit, you may, but don't ruin the server. Most of all, enjoy :P.

Fursuit Magic

[adjective][species] - Fri 12 Oct 2012 - 13:00

A few years back , I had the opportunity during a large convention to converse with a fursuiter whose talents and antics I admired greatly. Long ago, you see, before furry was much of an organized fandom I was a suiter myself. As we spoke, just a few feet away two dogs and some sort of feline were playing gently with a little boy and girl, whose eyes were as big as saucers. All was going well until another suiter– who I’ll very carefully fail to describe– walked up, took his head off, and asked one of the dogs when the F he was going to come back to the room. And that, needless, to say, ended that. In a flash the moment was gone and the offended parents were dragging their screaming kids away.

“There ought to be a law against that,” I muttered.

“Yeah,” my friend replied. “Abuse of magic in the first degree.”

For fursuits are magical, you know. Anyone who’s ever worn one in public understands this, all the way to the innermost depths of their soul. The human mind is built to function via the complex interaction of symbols, and few objects carry more symbolic weight than a ‘suit. Putting one on messes with your head – and those of others – by eliminating or masking all the cultural symbol-sets by which others understand at a glance who you are and how you fit in. Your hairstyle, your clothing, your posture and gait…even your face, the most important identifier of all, is whisked away. No one can even tell for sure if you’re male or female. All the social markers so vital to everyday hominid life are tossed to the winds, leaving all who see you adrift and in a state of vague unease.

The effect is double upon the suiter himself, however. When he looks in the mirror, he greets a total stranger. A blank slate, in other words, whose duty it is for him to fill out and bring to life. The “mask effect” is well known in psychological circles, so I won’t belabor it here. Suffice it to say instead that a good costume, particularly a whole-body one like most fursuits, is both liberating and exhilarating. For my own part, wearing one had the effect of sort of turning up the “contrast” knob on life. Everything became sharper edged, I grew more aware of my surroundings… Every second of every minute burned itself into my memory. I was alive, in short, fully and completely in a manner that I’ve never achieved in any other way. I wasn’t a very good fursuiter – in fact, I rather stank at it and that’s why I gave it up. Yet…those few hours I spent here and there in suit remain among the most intense memories of my life.

These mental/social identity-softening effects lie at the root of a fursuit’s magic, and also explain why it’s so powerful. Nothing affects how we see the universe more profoundly than our viewpoint, and nothing I can think of short of hallucinogens in massive doses does more to alter said viewpoint (on the part of the suiter and bystanders alike) than a fursuit.

This is particularly true of children, whose grasp on reality is still not yet all that firm to begin with. After all, are their TV screens not alive with capering animals who smile and laugh and play? The jump from reality to fantasy is much smaller for them, so that the mere sight of a decently-made fursuit can transport them into a sort of delightful alternate world.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” I can hear my patient readers thinking just about now. “We all know that clowns and such have a special role in society, and that it’s wrong to break the illusion and ruin the magic.” But… As furries, I suspect we’ve grown a bit jaded to the wonder of it all. We tend to forget how powerful our magic is, like the unnamed fursuiter in my opening example, and abuse it with more terrible effects than we know.

Back when I fursuited, the only venues available were kid-related activities. The first major one I “worked” was playing the Easter Bunny at an orphanage for abused little girls. It was a pretty tough gig, because most of the residents were in their teens and thought a guy in a bunnysuit was about the uncoolest thing possible. But one little girl about six or seven years old – I’ll call her “Alice” – met me with wide eyes and asked “Are you a real rabbit?”

“Of course!” I reassured her. Then for the next hour she prattled on and on with me about what it was like to be a bunny while I improvised. “Of course I eat grass! But only cooked grass – I’m a civilized rabbit!” Then the Easter Egg hunt was finally held, and while Alice was off hunting eggs (she won!) the orphanage’s counselors closed in on me en-masse and demanded to know what I’d been talking to her so long and intently about. At first I was angry – it sounded like they were accusing me of something pretty terrible.

“No!” they explained. “It’s not that at all. You see, she was terribly abused about six months ago, and hasn’t said a single word to anyone since.”

When Alice came back with first prize she was still full of chatter, and when I left she was energetically telling her counselors all about me. Half of them were crying.

And so was I.

So… Fursuits are magic of a very special and sacred kind. No one will ever convince me otherwise. Not only that, but they’re potent. Those wearing them carry deep obligations to use their powers responsibly. Far too few seem to understand this, in my book.

And the fursuiter who used the F-word in front of children with his head off in public? He told me to F myself a few minutes later, when I tried to explain my concerns. It’s too bad that every story can’t have a happy ending.

My fursona immersed in her book.
