Achewood is pitching a TV series

Fursday - Reading List - Thu 28 Nov 2013 - 19:28

Achewood is a comic series by artist & writer Chris Onstad, inspired by his ex-wife’s stuffed animals. The Verge's culture section has run a profile piece:

Most of Achewood is about the mundane daily activities of the characters, who throw parties, have internet relationships, start Subway franchises, and take road trips. They go to heaven, hell, and the moon. They time travel and produce platinum albums.

Onstad has a few other tricks that make Achewood distinctive. He relies heavily on pop culture references, French cuisine, and obtuse, often made-up slang. The site TV Tropes notes that Achewood relies on "Genius Bonus," inside jokes buried where only insiders can find them.

"Achewood is transcendent," says Cohen, a fan and fellow comic writer who asked not to use his last name, in an email to The Verge. "On the surface there’s his obvious genius of phrasing and timing that’s unlike anything before or since. He’s also able to convey more with a raised eyebrow than anybody — part of that’s the minimalism of the art; when stuff is simple minor changes get magnified … It’s also just plain the funniest goddamned thing there is, in a way that’s hard to objectively qualify without getting into a really tedious (for some) discussion about discourse and dialogue mechanics and subversion."

After over a decade he's decided to branch out into a TV series he has been pitching around. See more about the video on The Watchlist.

Achewood TV pilot shorts

Fursday - Watch List - Thu 28 Nov 2013 - 19:14

The Verge wrote a piece about the web cult following around the comic Achewood, which also spoke about a TV pilot the creator Chris Onstad has been pitching around to studios.

Achewood: The TV Show has a long way to go. Onstad and his production company are working on a new pitch. They’ve built the software models and developed a workflow to create the cartoon using motion-capture actors, a process Onstad says is faster even than South Park’s famously quick turnaround.

"I don't think we nailed the tone and humor of Achewood by any means," Onstad says. "I'm excited to write version two, knowing what I know now about how all that work, all those actors, engineers, and producers come together, which is a hell of a lot."

Watching through it I noticed an uncanny life-like fluid motion to the characters, which is explained by the production team's motion-capture technology. Presumably 3D models with skeletal rigs are synced to the motion-capture and outputted as a flat cartoonish animation. Very interesting technology that any would-be animator (furry inclined or otherwise) would love to get their mitts on.

Jacqueline Donneli to be asking about Furry reality show soon.

Furry Reddit - Thu 28 Nov 2013 - 17:31

Jacqueline Donneli, the producer of the furry reality show, whom I have been in contact with about the reality show, is planning on discussing the reality show here on /r/furry. Considering how her plans for the show are actually taking a look at the fandom, instead of just making another yiff fest disaster piece, I suggest we do well by her. Edit one:typo

The Bear and Mouse Come To America

In-Fur-Nation - Thu 28 Nov 2013 - 13:01

Big news from our friends over at Cartoon Brew, especially if you’re a fan of traditional animation: “Indie animated feature distributor GKIDS has announced that the highly anticipated hand-drawn French film Ernest and Celestine will open in New York and Los Angeles on March 14, 2014. That will be followed by national expansion to all major US markets. GKIDS has qualified Ernest and Celestine for the Academy Awards this year in the film’s original French language with subtitles. The American release, however, will be dubbed with a voice cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Lauren Bacall, Paul Giamatti, William H. Macy, Megan Mullally, and Nick Offerman. The small New York-based distributor has experienced fantastic success at the Oscars during the past five years by countering the big studios with quieter, more personal hand-drawn fare. They have earned nominations for three of their features: The Secret of Kells, A Cat in Paris, and Chico & Rita.” Check it out next year.

And with that, we wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. Needless to say, you have our THANKS for reading this regularly! We appreciate your company.

Rabbit show jumping

Fursday - Watch List - Thu 28 Nov 2013 - 04:00

Rabbit show jumping is an actual thing, hopping over poles much like horse show jumping minus the rider, on a smaller and cuter scale.

Bunny rabbits are adorable enough when they're just sitting there twitching their pink noses or lapping water up from their little bottles, but when they're hopping over brightly colored fences like tiny, long-eared horses while their super-enthusiastic trainers cheer from the sidelines, it makes you wonder why rabbit show jumping isn't on TV all the time.

Also I find this endearing. You’d never see a horse be able to do that.
