A little hello to the subreddit

Furry Reddit - Fri 17 Oct 2014 - 10:36

Hallo! My name is Jack Alexender. I've been a member of the fandom since i was about 16 (turning 21 this coming nov) and i figured i would start to stalk this lovely little subreddit.

And since every fur has their "Talent" mine happens to be www.youtube.com/darkfoxinc

Anyway i hope to be as active as i can on this subreddit. Love this fandom more then anything. It's practically the only reason i'm able to talk to people and be sociable! ~<3

I thought this came out pretty well, but I haven't gotten any feedback on it, so I was hoping I could get some here :D

My sona is a bullwolf, I wanted to try mixing more elements of both species. I'm still trying to get better, so -anything- helps, thanks!

Let's Talk DDOS

Furry Reddit - Fri 17 Oct 2014 - 08:39

We're going into Day 3 of our DDOS. As of tonight, FA will be approaching the 72 hour mark of the DDOS. A lot of questions has come up, so I'd like to try to answer them as best I can.

The current status on FA is that we're waiting on our host to give the all clear. Once we get that, FA will go back up with minimal services while we make some changes and tweaks (changing IPs and moving some of our services around).

If you have questions/comments regarding the DDOS I'll be answering them over the course of the day. I'll also be sending this out to other sites affected to see if they want to join and comment on their own situation.

Q) What is a DDOS?

A) A DDOS is a Distributed Denial of Service attack. Essentially, a massive network of computers all targeting an endpoint and dumping a massive amount of traffic down all at once. You could equate this to driving on a near empty road and instantly, BAM! 100,000 cars appear can cause gridlock. Or, as I like to put your data has to get from Point A to Point B and Godzilla's ass is blocking the path.

Q) What can you do about it?

A) Not much. You either have to "ride it out" or start blocking traffic on the router level. You can blackhole an IP, dumping any traffic that reaches an endpoint to help curb the tide. This is what we did on FA. The site never went down, but the network access to the site did.

Q) Why don't you have XXX DDOS protection?

A) Because we already had some DDOS protection available from our host (we can theoretically absorb a DDOS up to 10Gbit even though we only have a 500Mbit line). However, the level of traffic far exceeded what we had available and started to impact the host. So much so, it was impacting other servers and hosts in four different facilities.

Q) I heard FA is dying.

A) Nope. Not dying.

Q) I heard FA lost all it's data!

A) The data's fine. The DDOS has just made accessing the site problematic. We are able to SSH (remote) into the site since our host opened that up for us, so we can get to it from our side and do what we need. It's just not publicly available.

Q) You're fat!

A) Cupcakes are frakkin' delicious, what can I say.

The Mouse Guard Were Young Once

In-Fur-Nation - Fri 17 Oct 2014 - 01:10

For several years now David Petersen (creator, writer, and artist of the award-winning Mouse Guard series) has annually been putting together an illustrated fable from the Mouse Guard universe for Free Comic Book Day. Now Archaia Comics have brought together four of them (along with two new stories) in Baldwin the Brave and Other Tales, a new full-color hardback. “Every hero was once a child, listening to stories of the heroes who came before them. It is the same with the Mouse Guard. Six mouse fables are spun to a few familiar young furs, reminding us all to be brave, stay true to ourselves, and follow our hearts. Brand new stories include ‘Service to Seyan,’ set in the land where Mouse warriors travel after death, and ‘Oh Day Away,’ a tale of the insect faeries of the Mouse world!” Archaia have an interview with the creator himself over on their web page. Baldwin the Brave comes out this November.

Just thought some people might be interested in this if they didn't know about it. It recently went up earlier in the day, and I think is an interesting idea. www.furgather.com

Do any fursuit dancers incorporate their character into their dancing?

Furry Reddit - Thu 16 Oct 2014 - 19:54

Seems like in all the fursuit dancing videos I've seen, people stop playing any kind of character. They just do modern club dancing like they would if they weren't wearing a fursuit.

Does anyone actually retain some furry character or mannerisms when dancing? Got any videos?
