Lowering your standards - Art; Pricing and discouragement.

Furry Reddit - Wed 5 Nov 2014 - 22:43

[Warning: Small rant/venting included; TL;DR at the bottom]

I think any artist can relate with me on this one.

I've been working hard on a suit to sell, and I finally put it up for sale. It's unique, great design and color, and very aesthetically appealing [or so I'm told], but... no one will bite.

I'm caught between my love for my work, my need to put out a high-quality product, and having the means to profit at least a little bit from it to pay the bills.

Where do you draw the line? I've seen downright bad-looking suits sell and sell quickly simply because the price was low. I can't bring myself to make and sell a sub-par product, but, at this point, it seems that people can't afford higher priced items or simply value a lower, more affordable prices over design, comfort, and quality.

I love what I do, but I'm very torn. I have bills that need to be paid, and I feel like just saying "Fuck it!" some days and building a sloppy mess of a suit that I don't put much effort into just to sell it for 100$ or so. Make and sell 10 of those bad boys and BOOM! Bills paid. Seems to work for others. I dunno.

TL;DR: Fellow artists of any medium, what do you think? Churn out 50 doodles to sell for a dollar each? Or spend time on making a beautiful piece that may take lots more time to make and get someone to buy?

Trying to explain the fandom to my boyfriend

Furry Reddit - Wed 5 Nov 2014 - 20:03

Sorry if something similar has been posted recently, but I need some advice. My boyfriend is a "non furry," he doesn't mind the fandom and appreciates when I send him cute art, but when we start discussing the fandom he just doesn't get the appeal behind it. I've explained my story to him and why I like it, but he doesn't understand why we dress up in fursuits or purchase art of our fursonas. I need someone to help me with this because I don't actually know the answer to this.

Writing Prompt Wednesday, Roaring Twenties Edition!

Furry Reddit - Wed 5 Nov 2014 - 18:16

Hello and welcome to this week's Writing Prompt Wednesday! Sorry it's late. This time the prompt is to write a furry story in the Roaring Twenties, because this is our subreddit theme this month.

As always, stories can be a maximum of 5 comments long, if you need to write more than 5 comments leave a link to an external site after your 5th reply. If you can fit it in under 5 comments, it's preferred that you just put it here. No erotica, swearing is fine.

Remember to leave suggestions for future Writing Prompt Wednesdays in the future, leave your suggestions as seperate comments!

The time is nigh for tommy guns and classic film noir, so get to writing!

Motivation for Art?

Furry Reddit - Wed 5 Nov 2014 - 15:13

How do you guys stay motivated to practice your art/continue drawing? I've been home sick all day and every time I've put pencil to paper, I start thinking, 'This is not coming out how I want it to...' or 'How do I expect myself to finish this if it looks this bad already?' Advice?

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who has given their advice, I really do take it to heart!
