Looking ahead to Furry Book Month
October is Furry Book Month, and we’re only a few weeks away! We have a few fun things going on next month to celebrate, including another book bundle!
We are taking submissions for both a general audiences and an 18+ book bundle until Sept. 26, 2024. To submit your novel for consideration, please keep the following qualifications in mind:
The author must be a member of the Furry Writers’ Guild.
The story must be self-published.
The story must be a novel.
The story must be a stand-alone or first in a series (no sequels).
The story must be furry.
The story cannot have been included in a previous bundle.
The bundles will be available on Gumroad for pay-what-you-want (minimum price of $10), with proceeds split evenly between all contributing authors and the FWG. Please get your entries in before September 26th, since we want the bundle to go live on October 1st. We would like to include around ten novels per bundle. Since we want to showcase as wide a variety of writers as possible, we are more likely to choose submissions by authors who have not been featured in a previous bundle.

In other Furry Book Month news, it’s time to sharpen your typing claws because we’re launching the first Furry Novel Jam! This is similar to the November novel writing challenge that most of us have heard of. Instead of November, we’ll be writing throughout October–hopefully without as many distractions from holidays, school deadlines, etc.
The rules are pretty simple. Set a writing goal for October, and on Oct. 1, start! You can cheer on your fellow writers on the Discord server, arrange word sprints and mini competitions, and basically just have fun. It’s easy to lose the joy of writing amid the pressures we put on ourselves, and it can also be hard to make time to write. Sometimes turning the solitary, cerebral practice of writing into a ridiculous race with a bunch of likeminded people can help you regain both joy and discipline.

Utterly out-of-nowhere department. Thanks to friends we stumbled upon Nightbitch, an upcoming horror-comedy starring Amy Adams (Enchanted, Arrival), based on a 2021 novel by Rachel Yoder. Adams stars as a suburban mom not only struggling with raising her young son, but also wrestling with resentment over having to give up her previous life as an artist. Oh, and at night, she’s turning into a domestic dog. Yes. The film is directed by Marielle Heller, and it’s coming to theaters on December 6th. There are so many examples of ones that are pretty good, using the same tried and true formula for the genre, not innovating way too much and providing a decent amount of content. There are far fewer examples of games like Kitsune Tails, which manages to surprise you over and over again with its nonstop parade of new level ideas, wonderful costume & ability changes, and a wealth of content to perfect. Rarely does something come along that is truly a wondrous addition to the plethora of platforming options like Kitune Tails. Well, here we are. It’s September, the start of a new season and a new chapter in FWG’s history as our previous long-serving president, JFR (Jaye) Coates has stepped down and I am officially the new president. My name is Kate Shaw (writing usually as K.C. Shaw), and I’ve been in the background as vice president for several years now. I don’t post much so you might not know me, but I love everything the guild stands for and I’m proud to have helped Jaye bring so many important changes about since 2021. I hope I can continue her stellar work going forward.
Jaye will still be around, of course, as a guild member, moderator on various platforms, and editor of the forthcoming Tales from the Guild: Blood and Water anthology. We’ll miss her as president, but we’re all excited to see her writing and publishing adventures continue.
That said, we are now down several guild officers. If you’ve ever considered helping out, we currently need a treasurer and vice president. Feel free to contact me or any other guild officer if you’d like to step up, although we will also be holding officer elections as usual in April of 2025.
I’m delighted that my first “official” act as president is to congratulate guild member Edi Álvarez for doing so well in the International Latino Book Awards! His novel Virtus Draconis was a finalist for Best Fantasy Novel and won honorable mention for Best First Book. It’s available in both Spanish and English editions. His book Como una Fiera also won honorable mention for Most Inspirational Young Adult Book. Congratulations!

羅恩表示，本次演唱會將演唱全新五首全原創歌曲、數首Cover曲目以及情境劇。首發全創作曲《你是我的狗，我要你乖乖坐下。》，是羅恩為了要戰勝對狗的恐懼所寫，以搖滾曲風來呈現這世界頂端是由貓科主宰。歌曲目前已在YouTube、spotify、Street Voice、Apple Music平台上發布。其他四首原創曲目將會陸續公開，第二首原創曲預計將在九月公開，更多相關消息會在募資平台上公布。

30-Something Shy Furry Having Trouble Befriending People at Meets and Cons
I find it really hard to connect with people in the fandom, I moved to a place where i hoped it be easier for me to make fandom friends but it seems like conversation just die out and i have been unable to make meaningful connections. I went to my first meetups this year and every time it feels like im just wandering about, It doesn't help that im a very introverted and anxious person.
How do people make so many friends that it always seems like they are chatting with someone during cons/meetups?

Yes, breaking down that wall can be a challenge, especially if you are a shy person. It can be harder for older furries over 30, too, because so many in the fandom are in their teens and twenties.
The people you see at conventions clustered in little groups likely were friends before they got there. It truly is much more fun to go to a con or a meet if you already know people and can hang out with them. Some of my best memories are going to the now-defunct Califur with my friend Cyberbear and others.
When walking into an environment filled with people you don't know, you need something to "break the ice." To do this, you can't be shy. You know how uncomfortable it can be to see a nervous person on stage trying to talk in front of an audience and they make mistakes and their hands shake and their voice quavers? People have a hard time watching that. The same goes for crowds of people at parties. If you look at your shoes, hem and haw, sound nervous, etc., people will be uncomfortable and, though they might be polite to you, they will want to move away from you.
So, you really do need to be confident in yourself. It should, hopefully, help that you're in a room with a lot of people who share your interests, which brings me to the next point: Finding something in common and using that to start a conversation. It helps that all these people at a convention or meet are literally wearing their personalities on the outside. Whether it is a fursuit or a shirt with logos of a favorite band or TV show, you can easily spot what they like. You can start conversations with things like, "I love your fursuit! Did you make it or is it a commission? etc. etc." If they are wearing, say, a Star Trek shirt, you can say you're a Trekker and strike up a conversation that way. It is important that, when doing this, you try not to dominate the conversation. Ask a lot of questions and show an interest in them as a person. Oh, you can also maybe draw people to you based on what you are wearing. The same applies if you are observing an activity. Most cons or other gatherings have game rooms. If you enjoy gaming, you can certainly see if you can join in on a board or card or video game with others. Once you get your foot in the door, keep asking questions and talking and see where the conversation goes. Let it wander from topic to topic and don't try to control the conversation. If things go well, see if you can't invite them to join you for some noms or accompany you to a party room. Remember, most people love to talk about themselves. Be a good listener.
As for overcoming anxiety in the first place, before you approach someone, try taking a few deep, cleansing breaths. Try to find people who look promising that they would share some commonalities with you. Rehearse a little in your head how you will introduce yourself. Also, especially at cons, there are often forums and talks involving special interest groups such as a meet for railroading aficionados or TikTok video makers or Kimba the White Lion fans or whatever. Check out the furcon program and see if you can find something suitable for you and participate!
