Second trailer for 'Zootopia'
Posted by crossaffliction (Brendan Kachel) on Mon 23 Nov 2015 - 13:07 — Edited as of Thu 26 Nov 2015 - 20:27
Zootopia director Rich Moore Tweeted yesterday that the second trailer would be coming tomorrow. Which is today. So, trailer.
It mostly consists of footage already released at earlier D23 expos, but not made available outside said expos until now. Which is nice for those of us who don't get to town very often.
Zootopia is coming to theaters March 4 of next year.
Update (11/25): A short bonus clip has been released as well.
Update (Happy Thanksgiving!): And another. This time with sound!

This movie makes my blood boil. I would like if the story was more constructed and less reliant on sight gags. XP
DMVs are mostly digital now so...yeah. XP
Talk about a joke that'll be dated soon. If that's not a sign of the times I don't know what is.

At this point we don't know enough to know that it's not a well-constructed story, or that it is. I for one am quite excited about this movie, but along with that there is a sort of fear that after all the buildup and anticipation, once the movie finally comes out and we go to see it, we will find it to be a disappointment, even after allowing for some tendency to overbuild our expectations. What we know so far is that it's got great visuals, a strong voice cast, and a good crew. What remains to be seen is whether the plot and characterization hold up to it, or fall flat. Visuals, sight gags, and in-jokes can add to a story or detract from it.
Also, I don't think worrying about over-hyping trailers in the year of Star Wars: Episode VII is much of a crime.
Earlier this year, I was at a theater that actually had nerds shushing the audience when the trailer came on (I think this was before Mission Impossible IV?); and not like a new trailer, either. It was the teaser, the one over a six months old at this point. It's not like they hadn't seen it a thousand times on YouTube before. Or that this is actually the fourth Star Wars movie to come out in their lifetimes (and the previous three are now considered pretty disappointing).
Also, Cassidy, your schtick, well, it's not getting old, because it started old, but now you're just predictable. I mean, I've been saving this image just for the sake of replying to you replying to this trailer. But, anyway, enjoy Angry Birds.
I really hope I'm wrong at this point heh. I want to be surprised. I'll probably put together a real outline of what I predict the plot will be just to see how wrong I am. And CA, you can laugh when I'm wrong should that day come. And I'm not as excited for Angry Birds as Rock Dog, heh.
Though it does seem like you're worshipping this film just a bit. XP

Well, it partially depends what you want out of a movie. I'm fairly anti-Disney (more the corporate, advertizing and branding aspects) - although there are things here and there I like - but even if the story in Zootopia ends up being nothing special, I look forward to seeing the animation and art design, how the characters look, walk and move. Similar example - take the first volume of the Blacksad comic - very cliche story, but great character designs. I really enjoy seeing character expressed through animal imagery; that's one of the main reasons I got into furry fandom.
Edit: I'm reminded of Bob & Ray's old sketch, Slow Talkers of America.
I've pre-ordered the Zootopia Junior Novelization from Amazon.com, so I should find out as soon as it's released (on January 19, ahead of the movie) whether the story looks imaginative or it's just a framework to support the CGI art and a bunch of sight gags and other visual humor.

That sounds interesting, be sure to let me know! I'll try to get my prediction of the plot out by then! X3

This is the first time I've seen a trailer that was simply a nonstop movie clip - why did they have to pick one that was deliberately boring? I felt like the bunny who just wanted to get a move on. I wonder if they'll have a follow-up trailer that's another lengthy movie clip - only maybe with a little zip this time.
- Joe
I'm not sure if boring is the word, but I found the trailer more aggravating than funny.
Boring -- aggravating -- I would say tedious. It certainly doesn't make me want to see the movie. At least Disney doesn't seem (let's hope!) to be succumbing to the curse of putting all of the best scenes into the trailer.
At least, even if this trailer is a fair sample of the movie, we don't have to worry about "Zootopia" being a candidate for the Worst Anthropomorphic Movie of the Decade.

Missing "Cool Cat Saves the Kids".
Huh. I must say I disagree with a lot of the comments here. I really liked this trailer, more than the first one I saw. The other was okay but nothing special. This one gave a hint of story (Yay!), had interaction between the characters (Also good), made me laugh (I also don't think the jokes will become dated very soon) and it looks cool.
"If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind."
~John Stuart Mill~
Definitely agree; I'm actually surprised by a lot of the negative comments.
When they showed this clip at the D23 Expo, they showed the full, un-cut version -- that's right folks, the scene is actually LONGER! And the reaction? You could hear people choking on their tongues, they were laughing so hard. Especially at Flash's slow-motion laugh. People hurt themselves.
I do wonder about showing an extended scene clip as a "trailer". But then I wondered about it for the extended "Dad meets Po" scene in the previous "Kung Fu Panda 3" trailer also. It seems a strange thing to do.
Perhaps they haven't got all the assets necessary to render enough a 'diverse' trailer yet?
This is a comparatively… slow scene, with few character models for most of it. Easier to do, maybe.
I will admit the change of expression in the sloth after hearing the joke is the best part. Though context as to why the fox is trying to hinder the rabbit would have probably tied the scene better.
Plot (and possible SPOILERS): She has been given 48 hours to solve the missing otter case (which has grown cold) or she will be a traffic cop for the rest of her career. He has been told that, as a material witness in the case, he'll be let off for an earlier minor offense if he helps her for 48 hours. So basically she is desperate to succeed, but he has no interest in the case -- he simply wants to make her suffer through the next 2 days to prove he doesn't need her. Needless to say perhaps, as the 48 hours wear on they BOTH discover that there's much more TO the case than a missing otter...
Sounds like the Mike Myers/Austin Powers school of humor, which was once explained to me as "beat a joke to death until it's not funny anymore, then keep beating it until it becomes funny again."
- Joe
Although I for one found the scene amusing and the Flash's facial reaction the best part, I will say I am not looking forward to seeing it again in the movie after it's already been played out here.
Watching this scene in the movie will be quite a "meta" experience, with the film-makers in the "fox" role and the audience as the "bunny". Yes! I know the scene (or joke) already and I want to hurry up to the rest of the movie.
Kung Fu Panda 3 did it too with the "they don't realize they're father and son" joke with their first (English) trailer (with the same problems). It's a weird mini-trend.
Yeah... not sure if I like this trend. I have a feeling more preview scenes spotlighting different supporting characters/animals are on the way, in which case we could potentially see up to 10% of the film in trailers before it's released. :/
Hmm. That teaser clip seems to solidify my points about the movie relying on the setting more than interesting characters. Who cares if they can take selfies when the characters are bland. XP

Sometimes, you just need to take a step back and take stock of what's really important.
(Also, you know Cassidy's a girl's name, right?)
Well as an asexual female I can't really relate to that. XP
And thanks for pointing out that Cassidy is a female name ^^

Okay, one.
Okay, two, complaining about "setting overshadowing character" in a clip about two characters interacting over a background of a blank, white void is maybe not the smartest critique.
Okay, three, in said clip, Nick goes from by himself, to surprised and annoyed by Judy, to fighting back, to just giving in and allowing his new bunny friend to share in with his selfie is a complete and satisfying character arc.
Okay, four, since your first post here was "I hate Zootopia", and almost every subsequent post of yours has been "I hate Zootopia," regardless of what other posters tell you or what new information is revealed about the movie, Nick has more character development in the space of that seconds long, silent clip than you have in the last half year posting here!
Okay, five, the movie isn't out yet, so it may suck, it may be awesome, we don't frickin' know. Assuming it's going to be good doesn't cost me anything. And your constant negativity doesn't flatter you.
Okay, six, it's all you talk about, heck even when you point out you like something, it's usually framed as "I like this better than Zootopia (which sucks, by the way)". It's not just that you're being a jerk (and you are), it's that your being a boring jerk.
So, in conclusion, no I don't think you're capable of having a real discussion about this movie.
1. How am I saying I'm better than you...?
2. Not setting as in background, but technological setting. Who cares if selfies exist in that universe?
3. While sure it's a decent arc, it doesn't leave much room to speculate. Obviously Nick will do something to redeem himself in the movie since he's not the nicest character ever, and none of the info about the movie says otherwise to that. They're not trying to surprise anyone. XP
4. To be fair, all you post about is Zootopia. Books, Posters, etc. I'd like to see some more! Like...why didn't Caravan Palace get a post when they used anthros in their music video? That's more interesting than kids books (or maybe when NCIS:LA had a legit moment where the two characters discussed the fandom and having fursonas). XP
5. I'm not saying it'll be bad, I'm saying it's predictable and underwhelming. Like I said, I plan to release a video where I make a full start to finish guess about the plot of the movie. If I'm wrong, then I'll own up to it! If the movie surprises me and is genuinely clever then I'll say it! I keep bringing up Rock Dog because the director of it, Ash Brannon, directed Surf's Up. The most unconventional ground breaking animated film in years. Cody doesn't win the trophy or whatever which goes against audience expectations for the underdog story. He rescues his friend. That is something that you can't give away, spoil or predict. But to know just from the attitude of Nick that he'll redeem himself in the movie is kinda sad. XP
6. I can talk about a lot of things. , Eurovision, Music, Movies (The Gift is f*cking amazing btw), TV, etc, but ALL YOU POST IS ZOOTOPIA (Yes I know there are other things but Comics are not an area I'm familiar with, and movies with almost no information are hard to quite make and opinion on besides yay or nay). I get that it's furry related and must be posted about but then just cause that's what you post about and that's all I can comment on, doesn't mean that's all I can say. XP
My rebuttal is that you don't post enough else for me to comment on. Let's have a real discussion then.

First of all, it's called implications. Don't try and pull that passive aggressive shit on me.
My response to your rebuttal is pay better attention.
My response to your question about a "real discussion" is we can't have a "real discussion" when we're just guessing. (Also, I don't respect your opinions. That's also a problem.)
My response to your assertions that they aren't trying to surprise me is "duh." I'm a furry fan, not a surprise fan. Maybe if there were more high budget talking fox movies per annum I would have higher standards about what I got excited about, but there aren't, so I don't.
I actually really like redemption stories. Most people like redemption stories. What would be sad is if the giant fucking asshole protagonist was still a giant fucking asshole at the end of the story. And, you know what, you like redemption stories. In fact, that was the point of Surf's Up's ending you like so much. Cody was a selfish asshole only interested in winning, but then he learned the importance of friendship (or, put another way, the importance of not being a selfish asshole) and let someone else win, so he kind of, you know, redeemed himself. Also, how you can say Surf's Up is "the most unconventional ground breaking animated film in year" without bringing up what is actually unconventional and ground breaking (the mockumentary style applied to an animated movie) while apparently praising the parts that aren't (the story which, while nice, is both not as clever as you think it is and is also the exact same type of story you are accusing Zootopia of being).
Also, Jesus Christ, watch Rocky some time. Spoiler alert; HE FUCKING LOSES!
Now, in your defense, Zootopia will probably have a pretty standard story; fuck's sake, I pointed it out it was a bog-standard cliche "buddy cop/wunza plot" movie back in my first article on the subject. Here's an Internet video from last year explaining why they're terrible. Nobody fucking cares! But, you know, you've made your stand; you're going with the literal cheap Chinese knockoff. Good for you. Brave choice. And in all honesty, maybe kinda looking forward to that to, though the complete lack of a release date kind of makes it hard to get excited for. And, by the way, who's byline is under the Rock Dog trailer article on Flayrah?
But, you know, maybe cool it on the pissing on the parade. Because that brings me to what I've really wanted to say, ever since you've started posting here, and I really mean this from the bottom of my heart:
Shut up. Shut the fuck up. Please, for the love of God, shut your mouth. Shut up. Shut up. Shutupshutupshup. Shuttity up up up!
Now that that's off my chest, if you finish the video, post in the Newsbytes or whatever. Also, I really need to see The Gift. I keep putting it off, though, you realize that The Gift and Zootopia star the same guy, right?
Why am I pissing you off so much? Geez...
And yes I am aware of the Jason Bateman bit. That's why I brought it up. I don't doubt he can do a great job cause damn, he needs an Oscar nod for The Gift.
Can't we just be friends? ;w;

Well, for starters, I just wrote a comment explaining why you piss me off that broke triple digits in the word count, and your response is to ask me why you piss me off.
You know what, this guy is more annoying than you. He kind of had good timing for once; it's like, holy shit, there are way worse commenters.
Just don't be this guy.
Also, you know what, you want to be friends, just do me a favor.
Write a poll. Just go up to "submit" and write a poll. Whatever pops in there, because I've got nothing and it's Monday and that's what I'm going to have to do anyway. (Maybe avoid movies; we've done two weeks in a row, though.) It'll take minutes. Seconds, probably.
Sometime before, oh, let's say sixish in the evening tomorrow?
You can do that; just do it. Please.
And merry fucking Christmas to anyone still digging through this comment section.
Well, the question I think I meant to ask was why was my opinion pissing you off? I mean yeah, I posted it everywhere but you could just ignore it. XP
Heh wow. What a...unique comment. Trust me, I'm not that guy. X3
A poll? Sure, I don't see why not. I'm sure I can come up with something. I'll just need to check the time difference between Oklahoma and Vancouver. XP
Why don't we have a talk or something on Skype with instant messaging just to see if we can agree on something so there isn't any bad blood between us. I really don't like having people hate me.

You think made cross cross by speaking ill of Zootopia. I have one line that'd really get his dander up.
"Avatar deserved to defeat Fantastic Mr. Fox in the Ursa's!"
Look, guys, "literal cheap Chinese knockoff" is a good line. Also, I've got my poll for the week, so everything works out in the end.
I'm still not 100% clear on how it's a knockoff but yep, everything works out.

"What would be sad is if the giant fucking asshole protagonist was still a giant fucking asshole at the end of the story."
I don't know about stories, but in real life its perfectly possible for someone to remain a giant fucking asshole all the time. Believe me, I should know. ;-)
That's the point.
It's a story; it doesn't have to be like real life. It can be better.
It's too early to tell but the slow moving smile on the sloth made me smile :)
I'm not looking for a lot with this movie, the characters look adorable and it has some laughs (unlike something like The Nut Job, I'm sure they'll be actual laughs rather than groan inducing) - I'm sure I'll enjoy it enough.
