Status of FurryMuck

Your rating: None Average: 5 (4 votes)

Fans of FurryMuck have noticed that it's been unavailable. Apparently, Furry's DSL provider went out of business and took both of Furry's lines with it. For now, FurryMuck is at a temporary IP address and port, 12.37.14.197 8888. Two new DSL lines have already been ordered.

Hey, they've been Northpointed!

Now I don't feel so bad.

No no. The ISP that went down (@link) was a major backbone for the DSL providers, but wasn't the one that FurryMUCK used. Here is the full message for those of you who care:

11 May 2001: the major backbone provider of DSL services in this state

declared insolvency, taking both our direct connection with them, and

our backup with another provider, down in the process. This move has

left several tens of thousands of people and companies without

connectivity. We are expediting the purchase of new, completely

separate lines, and hope to have them in place by Thursday, May 17th.

In the meantime, you may connect to FurryMUCK as follows:

12.37.14.197 8888 (by IP address) furry.com 8888 (by name)

More information as we have it. -- the Administration

I understood that. When Northpoint declared themselves Chapter 11, the major carrier who supplied their connectivity from DSLAM to NAP realized, "Hey, they can't pay their bills," so they turned off the ATM network that connected Northpoint DSLAMs to the world. So the Northpoint DSL lines remained active for quite some time afterwards, but the data couldn't go anywhere.

Hence, Furry was Northpointed -- their lines were active, but the data itself couldn't get to/from them. :)

That's why I replied to the original article, and not your posting.

FurryMUCK may be 'back', but the connectivity is extremely poor. It's not usable in its current state.
