DEC032001F NEW SOULS STINZ BOSOM ENEMIES #3 FLIPBOOK TP 192pg,
$19.95
by Donna Barr
'Donna Barr is publishing Stinz/Bosom Enemies as a reversible special. . . . 103 pages of Stinz. Turn it over for 64 pages of Bosom Enemies. With two covers, it's 192-some pages of Barr-y goodness!' I don't know where
the other 25 pages come from. Both parts have lots of backstory, but given their infrequency, I imagine Barr makes the stories comprehensible for newcomers. Stinz is mayor of a community of half-horses (*don't* call them centaurs!) from the Geiselthal in Bavaria. Barr has been doing Stinz stories for over fifteen years now, first in *Centaurs Gatherum* and then from Fantagraphics, Brave New Words, MU, and now her own imprint. It's a rich and often grim world, in which Stinz was drafted for a war like WWI, the only non-two-legger in his unit, and came home when everything fell apart. Highly recommended. ‘Bosom Enemies' started as a short piece in Jim Groat's anthology series *Morphs*, expanded into two 64-page paperbacks from A Fine Line Press in 1999 and 2001. In this fantasy an American and a German soldier find themselves in an underground world where they have been turned into ‘turbs' (human above the waist, hands useless, two horse legs below), draft beasts to horse-headed humans. It's a pretty dark story of slavery and slaughter, worth reading.
