VCL Admin Resigns
Posted by Aureth on Tue 1 Apr 2003 - 07:56Animal links at KittenFilter
Posted by markfox on Tue 1 Apr 2003 - 11:44With the impending release of FreeFilter group weblog software there have been a profusion of MetaFilter clone sites--but the one Flayrah readers may care about is KittenFilter, taglined "serious discussion about cute animals." KittenFilter runs the gamut from the war dolphins to a memorial page for Spicket the hedgehog, so rabid animal fans might keep an eye trained on it.
Game by Goat, Music by Zombie
Posted by Cordite on Tue 1 Apr 2003 - 11:45Videogame developer Sotalus has decided to give their new release Ramses' Quest some backbone by bringing Rob Zombie on to do the soundtrack.
By this account the game is mediocre in all other regards, but it does give us this interesting plot synopsis:
"The title, a mind-numbing example of everything wrong with video games, stars Ramses, an anthropomorphic goat who ventures through 16 3D-rendered levels and attempts to save Princess Baa-bera from the evil Shearman."
RIP David "TV Dave" Neff
Posted by mwalimu on Tue 1 Apr 2003 - 12:01According to discussions over on Planetfurry, David "TV Dave" Neff passed away unexpectedly. He was stationed in Saudi Arabia with the military, but it appears his death was due to complications from diabetes.
I was not acquainted with David and don't know how old he was or much else about him, but he was well known and respected among those in the SabrinaVerse niche of the fandom.

Cory Doctorow Interviewed on Strange Horizons
Posted by Aureth on Wed 2 Apr 2003 - 07:01Strange Horizons has an interview with Cory Doctorow, Winner of the 2000 Campbell Award for Best New Writer and coeditor of the popular weblog, BoingBoing. In it, he talks about his first novel, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (which is, interestingly, available on his website for free download), being a Canadian ex-pat in (as he put it) John Ascroft's American, his work with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and his current novel projects. I found it to be a fascinating read.
Tigers turn on their keepers
Posted by Cordite on Thu 3 Apr 2003 - 20:22There have been two fatalities reported from tiger attacks within the past week:
William Olson, owner of a licensed sanctuary for exotic cats, was found dead in an outdoor enclosure on March 31st after police responded to a call reporting that he had been attacked. Two tigers were shot by the authorities in order to reach Olson.
More recently, at Safari Joe's Rock Creek Exotic Animal Park, animal handler Linda Bracket was pulled into a cage by tigers while watering them. She died of her injuries.
Mascot Miscellany
Posted by Cordite on Fri 4 Apr 2003 - 11:24Articles on mascoting seem to be more frequent these days, and this one touches on a bit of everything. From history to heat, manufacture to madness, even jumping out of planes.
"It's hard to defend yourself. I ran into a couple problems with students being so crazy I was hurt. You're not a human being inside it. People want to punch you, want to push you around. They'll beat the hell out of you."

West Hollywood bans cat declawing
Posted by mwalimu on Tue 8 Apr 2003 - 13:47By a vote of 5-0, the city of West Hollywood, CA, has enacted a ban on cat declawing. "We would just encourage our neighboring cities to follow our lead," said Councilman John Duran after the vote.
It is the first such ban animal advocates are aware of in the United States, though onychectomy, as the declawing procedure is formally known, is banned in several European countries. The Paw Project is an organization dedicated to educating the public on the effects of declawing felines and supports abolishing the practice.
Elephants to the rescue
Posted by Allicorn on Wed 9 Apr 2003 - 08:02In South Africa, some antelope had been rounded up by a "private game capture company" to be relocated for a breeding program, presumably to become hunting stock. However, the gamekeepers plans were foiled when wild elephants came to the rescue. Yahoo News has some more details here.
