2002 Recommended Furry Reading List - final update
Posted by Fred on Wed 1 Jan 2003 - 20:33The 2002 Anthropomorphic Recommended Reading/Viewing List was first posted on November 1st. This is the fourth and final update, adding the recommendations sent in during the last half of December. There were complaints that the 2001 Recommended List got confusing with too many separate updates, so this year all the additions are being added to the same List.

Our furry friends may be smarter than we think.
Posted by Goldenrod on Thu 2 Jan 2003 - 10:02Have you heard the one about the cat that could open a large door at an aircraft plant? Or the dog that helped a rancher by sniffing out buried irrigation valves? Or the fox that resorted to trickery to escape pursuing hounds?

Global Warming Impacting Ecosystems
Posted by Cordite on Thu 2 Jan 2003 - 16:13The journal Nature published two studies today which show that rising temperatures are affecting all manner of plant and animal life. From egg-laying, to flower-blooming, to migration periods, these changes may signal bad news for many species. Many news agencies carry this story including The Chicago Tribune and The Edmonton Journal.
Space race seriously stalled
Posted by MelSkunk on Thu 2 Jan 2003 - 19:05If you've been looking around and going "It's 2003 already, where's my moon colonies and Martian hotels?", you're not the only one. 2002 was a year of disapointments in the world of space development, with fewer lauches and job cuts all around the world.
Iraq, War, and... Tolkien?
Posted by Anon on Fri 3 Jan 2003 - 13:11These days it's hard to avoid hearing of U.S. plans to invade Iraq, and those in favour of such action are looking to some strange places for support - including the recent release of The Two Towers. Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), is quite upset with the film being used for pro-war purposes, as he and fellow actor Elijah Wood (Frodo) voiced last month with interviewer Charlie Rose.
PostNuke Upgrade
Posted by Aureth on Fri 3 Jan 2003 - 19:15The site was briefly down this evening in order to upgrade the PostNuke code to version 0.7.2.3. This promised couple of fixes for some annoying little bugs that had been plaguing me. Unfortunately, everytime I upgrade to fix one problem, another appears, equally as minor and annoying. A drawback of using under-development open source software, I think. The current minor yet annoying problem is the lack of proper coloring to the headers of replies to comments. I'm investigating.
Apes still smarter than thought
Posted by MelSkunk on Fri 3 Jan 2003 - 19:17Two recent articles on the BBC website have pointed to further advancements in the understanding of ape intellegence. Orang-utans, not one of the most social of great apes, still seem to be social enough to have developed regional cultures, everything from making a bronx cheer before sleeping to riding falling dead trees for the excitement. And like human cultures, once these groups are seperated, or extinct, the culture is gone too.
A group of researchers is claiming a pygmy chimpanzee they work with is talking. Well, not in full phrases, but the ape, kept as part of a linguistics group, has been noted making distinct sounds to accompany things like 'yes' or 'banana.' Given that he'll say the same sounding 'yes' whether happy or angry, it seems to be a case of spontanious vocal development, something thought not in the range of chimps.
CF2003 Mailings on the way!
Posted by darrelx on Sat 4 Jan 2003 - 11:36The Progress Report mailing just went out yesterday and today. If you were a member of CF2002 or pre-registered for CF2003, watch your mailbox for a large envelope.
Why is it so large? Because to save money on postage, we inserted the InFurNation newsletter (published by the folx at furrystuff.com) into the envelopes being used for our own mailing.
The ConFurence Group purchases InFurNation subscriptions for members of ConFurence as a benefit of membership, but since funds were low on their end, it worked out better that ConFurence paid for the shipping instead of for subscriptions.
Dealers and Artists: All the mailings included both the information packets for Dealers and Artists in them. Information on getting a Dealer's Room table, Space in the Artshow, or submitting artwork or advertising in this year's Souvenir Program book are all included in the mailing.
