Furries descend on Silicon Valley, modeling eccentricity for a staid tech culture

Furries In The Media - Sat 17 Jan 2015 - 10:50

Here is an article, dated January 16, in the Silicon Valley Business Journal:

http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2015/01/16/furries-descend-on-silicon-valley-modeling.html

It concerns this weekend's Further Confusion convention.

Furries, the lovably idiosyncratic, non-threatening folk who cavort in animal costumes and descend on San Jose annually to mingle, learn and dance, are back.

Further Confusion 2015, the convention themed this year as "London Fog: A Victorian Murder Mystery," kicked off Thursday. So far, about 2,100 people have preregistered for the event at the McEnery Convention Center downtown. By the time things wrap up Monday, organizers expect that number to top the 3,560 that attended last year.

I said it last year: These Furcon festivals might be Silicon Valley's last, best hope at weird. And it's true. The homogenous, suburban culture that evolved out of our tech companies is now an economic liability as employers cluster closer to the urban amenities of San Francisco.

So furries are serious business. Beyond its abstract importance, Further Confusion 2015 is expected to generate $3 million for San Jose merchants as furries occupy 3,200 hotel rooms, said Ben Roschke at Team San Jose, the nonprofit group that promotes the city as a destination and runs the convention center.

This year, people from 12 countries including Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Bermuda and Singapore have preregistered, event organizers said. The event is one of a few significant furry gatherings annually. Furfest in Chicago is a big draw and AnthroCon in Pittsburgh is the biggest event for fur enthusiasts each year.

In San Jose, the annual Fanime animation event draws more people each year, Roschke said. That one generates about $10 million in economic activity and fills about 10,000 hotel rooms.

How many of you that draw, draw on paper first then scan it and finish it in photoshop? Or do you just use your tablet to sketch it on the computer?

Furry Reddit - Sat 17 Jan 2015 - 00:38

I'm trying to get back into drawing and its been awhile since I used my Wacom and I find it a lot easier to draw on paper so I'm wondering would it just be easier to draw on paper and scan it then finish the last touches through photoshop or just do all of it through photoshop.

Can someone explain to me the popularity of "Five Nights at Freddy's" within the furry fandom?

Furry Reddit - Fri 16 Jan 2015 - 23:41

More and more I'm seeing furry art for the game Five Nights at Freddy's, and I don't really get it. Why do furry artists interpret those animatronic robots as cute and appealing? Why is that world so interesting to people?

It just looks like a game with jumps scares and bad graphics to me. Granted, I didn't have a fondness for animatronic animal mascots as a kid, nor did I spend much time at Chuck-E-Cheeses or similar places. Am I missing something?

Hello world! Newbie here.

Furry Reddit - Fri 16 Jan 2015 - 22:59

Hello everyone!

I am fairly new to Reddit, so sorry for the formatting errors. I am also a few days young to the furry fandom. Because of that, I have just a few questions, mostly about fursonas. (I am trying to create my OC, which I found is very difficult, because I seem to be creating Original Copies instead of Original Characters.)

-Which cliches do you hate to see, as in colors, species, style, etc?

-On the flip-side, which colors, species, styles do you want to see more of?

-Do you have any tips on finding your fursona?

-On animals that usually don't have fur, do you prefer them with or without?

There will probably be more questions coming, but thanks in advance for taking time to read this! It means a lot.

Can we stop kidding ourselves with some of these art posts?

Furry Reddit - Fri 16 Jan 2015 - 21:39

I'm a bit fed up with the some of the drawings that people put on here. I'm specifically talking about the one drawn on copy paper with a number 2 pencil and photographed with bad lighting and a 2 megapixel camera. I understand that people want to get better at art, but shoving something that's had very little effort put into it on the the sub is quite bothersome. I'm not commenting on anyone's drawing skills, simply the way it's presented. Maybe it's just me and maybe I'm just an asshole, but I really hope I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Let's talk about originality.

Furry Reddit - Fri 16 Jan 2015 - 21:16

This might be a sensitive subject for some but I'd like to hear everyone's opinion on character originality. I'm sure we all have heard of the term "sparkledogs" and seen people talking about how original a red fox or wolf is. Where is the line drawn for you? Are some species more or less creative just do to popularity? Is it better to have a well thought out character or a more unique one? What are your opinions about originality and the furry Fandom?

I'm going to draw a series of free line arts for people to use, I would like your suggestions!

Furry Reddit - Fri 16 Jan 2015 - 19:54

I'm so sorry for all these posts today, but I'm dead with art ideas and I can't work on my commissions for another couple hours.

I see talk about free line arts occasionally, and wouldn't mind making a few. Obviously wolves and foxes, but what other species are here to represent?
