I've been in the fandom for over a decade and here's what I've learned.
Hey all, I'm Grievre and I started poking around furry IRC channels at age 16 or so. I just turned 28 at furcon this year (god I'm old)! I'm noticing that /r/furry tends to have the younger side of the fandom in it so I thought I'd share some of my wisdom and life experience. Here's a list of things I would tell my 16 year old self if I could go back in time:
- Learn to enjoy unsolicited affection while you're young because you'll suddenly stop getting it in your mid 20s
- The reason you don't get along with your high school peers is because they're teenagers and teenagers are mean. It is not evidence that you're destined to only be friends with geeks and furries forever
- The above is important because it turns out that most geeks and most furries make shitty friends (at least compared to most ravers).
- You'll learn to be outgoing in college, it will help you get along with normal people, and then when you go back to the fandom people will be weirded out and threatened by it
- Being vocally mopey to get attention is fucking annoying. Stop doing it, and stop enabling people who do it.
- The only thing more annoying than the people who do that are the macho-wannabes. Respond to such people with a confident, assertive smile and they'll stomp off in a huff.
- Oh yeah, confidence. Get some of that
- There are furry rapists and you probably know at least one of them by name.
- Yes, furries get STDs. Yes, including HIV.
- Don't lose touch with your furry friends because it's really really hard to make new ones when you're not 17 Edit: I said it was HARD, not IMPOSSIBLE. Stop moping people, see a few bullets up :P
- Half of your friends are secretly zoophiles. Yes, including the ones who talk about how zoophiles should be burned at the stake.
- Half of your friends are into cub art. Yes, including the ones who blah blah you get the point
- A few years down the line you'll notice that all of your old furry friends are now using female name/pronouns/dress/etc. This should not come as a surprise.
- The mean comments you make about the above three groups of people DOES have an effect on them.
- If you meet someone online who's got a really cute personality and really sexy RP, don't discount them once you meet them in person because they're older/unattractive/shy. They're still just as cute/sexy on the inside.
Uhh... I'll add more later, suggestions?
(note: I make zero claims as to the universality of these experiences, I'm just saying what my life has been like)

Need help with character design
I have selected an animal (bobcat) for my fursona but I'm really struggling to make it a unique, interesting, but recognizable character. I guess it's a delicate balance between using crazy colors or hairstyles and keeping true to yourself and the original animal. It's just so frustrating for me! Anyone have some advice?
Here's my FA if anyone is interested in talking specifics. There's a picture of me on my profile and some terrible drawings I put together of my bobcat. :) http://www.furaffinity.net/user/mithryanna/

One Flew Over the Monkey’s Nest
This is direct from an article on Cartoon Brew: “Mexican animation firm Ánima Estudios, producer of the hit 2011 Mexican film Top Cat: The Movie, has released a trailer for its next feature Guardianes de Oz ([Guardians of Oz] retitled Wicked Flying Monkeys for English audiences). The film is set to premiere in Mexico on April 10, 2015. Directed by Alberto Mar (Top Cat: The Movie), the film has an original story by Mexico-born director Jorge Gutierrez, who helmed the recent Reel FX feature The Book of Life. Veteran American television writers Doug Langdale and Evan Gore are credited for the final script along with Gutierrez. Taking place in L. Frank Baum’s Oz universe, the film follows Ozzy, a young flying monkey who rebels against his boss, the wicked witch Evilene, and reaches out to the “Guardians of Oz”—the Lion, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man—who have been put under a spell by the witch.” The article also has a link to the trailer itself. It’s easy to see the connection between this and The Book of Life when you look at the character designs!
just a silly little nsfw question
I don't really know if this belongs on r/yiff or not so here I go... So if you study up on knotting between canids, then you'd know that the way that to canids un-knot is by letting the penis become flaccid. So in a hypothetical fur world, in which dildos are used, how would they... be removed?

One of those things that make you double-take...
Fursona trouble
I have been trying to create my own fursona in my own artstyle, but it hasn't been working out and really want atleast a reference for my fursona. I am not really certain what I should do. Should I try to find someone who does requests or use a base or what do you furs think?
